“We Have Moved Beyond Viharamahadevi Park, but There Is No Turning Back” – Opposition Criticises Government Over Buddhist Heritage
· Sri Lanka
An opposition representative has accused the government of acting in an authoritarian manner, alleging that its objectives extend beyond national development and threaten the heritage of the Buddhist Sasana.
Speaking at a media briefing, the speaker claimed that the government was making arrangements in various places to undermine Buddhist heritage and raised concerns over the appointment of a person described as non-Buddhist to the position of Minister of Buddha Sasana.
The speaker argued that responsibilities relating to religion and culture should be entrusted to individuals with a proper understanding of the country's cultural and religious heritage.
Referring to the ongoing discussion surrounding the Anuradhapura Sacred City, the speaker expressed concern over the treatment of Buddhist monuments, including the Ruwanwelisaya, alleging that the government did not recognise their religious significance.
The speaker also claimed that Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera had become one of the main targets in the unfolding developments, recalling the Thera's outspoken stance in relation to the war, the armed forces and the protection of national interests.
The speaker further stated that the President had made certain assurances to the Mahanayake Theras, stressing that political manoeuvring should not be allowed to interfere with religious matters.
Calling for transparency, the speaker demanded that the government disclose its urban development plans for Anuradhapura, adding that any attempts to interfere with Buddhist heritage would be opposed.
Referring to developments surrounding Viharamahadevi Park, the speaker declared that although the protest had moved on from the location, the issue had not been resolved and there would be no retreat from the campaign.
The speaker clarified that the objective was not to topple the government, but rather to protect the Buddhist Sasana from what was described as threats posed by the administration.
