Sanjaya Mahawatta Accuses Groups of Attempting to Create Ethnic Tensions Over Sacred City Conservation

Sanjaya Mahawatta, speaking at a media briefing organised by the Civil Intelligence Front, alleged that certain groups were attempting to create divisions among communities under the pretext of conserving sacred cities.

He claimed that groups which had previously made various statements and allegedly provoked tensions over the issue involving Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera were now attempting to use the controversy surrounding the Ruwanwelisaya to further their agenda.

Mahawatta referred to recent statements made by several groups identifying themselves as opposition parties and called on the Inspector General of Police to summon those responsible and investigate the reasons behind their statements.

He urged the police to examine the truth and accuracy of the allegations and statements being made.

He further alleged that certain groups had previously intervened unlawfully in matters concerning Ven. Gnanasara Thera and engaged in activities that could provoke tensions.

Mahawatta claimed that these groups were now attempting to exploit the Ruwanwelisaya controversy and urged the public not to be misled by what he described as organised attempts to create communal disharmony.
