US Pauses Immigrant Visa Appointments Worldwide Amid New Immigration Crackdown

The United States has temporarily paused immigrant visa appointments worldwide as the Trump administration introduces new training for consular officers as part of its broader immigration crackdown.

The U.S. State Department said a global training initiative had been launched at American embassies and consulates, requiring visa appointments to be adjusted to accommodate the programme. The training is focused on ensuring officers can evaluate visa applicants “comprehensively and consistently,” including assessing whether applicants are likely to become dependent on U.S. public benefits.

The pause affects immigrant visa applicants, including people seeking to move permanently to the United States through family- and employment-based immigration. Applicants with scheduled interviews have reportedly received notifications that their appointments would be rescheduled, although the State Department has not provided a definite timeline for when normal scheduling will resume.

The move comes amid President Donald Trump’s wider effort to tighten both legal and illegal immigration during his second term. His administration has pursued stricter visa screening, visa and green card revocations and additional measures targeting people considered likely to become dependent on public assistance.

The State Department has also introduced a pilot programme allowing certain immigrant visa applicants to use public charge bonds to overcome some public-charge concerns, reflecting the administration’s increased focus on applicants’ potential reliance on government benefits.

The latest pause does not amount to a suspension of all U.S. visas. Nonimmigrant categories such as tourist and student visas are not covered by the global immigrant-visa appointment pause, although individual visa services may continue to be adjusted at some locations.

With no firm date announced for the end of the training programme, affected immigrant visa applicants are being advised to monitor communications from the relevant U.S. embassy or consulate for updated interview dates.
