UAE President Honours flydubai Crew for Courage During Mid-Air Emergency

The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has conferred the First Class Order of Zayed II on members of the flydubai crew involved in the September 30 in-flight incident aboard Flight FZ1073, recognising their courage and efforts to protect passengers.

The honours were presented by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who also serves as the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, at a ceremony held on Tuesday, October 27.

Sheikh Hamdan commended the crew for their bravery, professionalism and sense of responsibility in safeguarding passengers during the incident. The recognition reflects the UAE leadership’s appreciation of their actions in a critical situation.

Crew Recognised for Protecting Passengers

Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE President, also praised the crew, describing their actions as an act of bravery that demonstrated the importance of protecting human life.

The recognition follows an incident involving flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 when it was diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

According to reports, the aircraft was carrying 174 passengers and eight crew members. The plane landed safely following the intervention of the crew and others on board.

Cockpit Altercation Led to Emergency Diversion

The UAE Public Prosecution subsequently stated that the co-pilot had attacked the captain inside the cockpit using a crash axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft.

The incident triggered an emergency response on board, with the crew taking action to protect passengers and help secure the aircraft.

The successful landing in Saudi Arabia brought the immediate emergency to an end, while the incident prompted an investigation by UAE authorities.

Recognition of Courage and Professionalism

The First Class Order of Zayed II recognises the crew members' contribution during an incident that placed the safety of passengers and the aircraft at risk.

The honour also highlights the importance of professionalism, teamwork and decisive action in aviation emergencies.

Through the recognition, the UAE leadership has acknowledged the role played by the flydubai crew in helping ensure the safe outcome of Flight FZ1073.
