Bribery Commission challenges bail granted to Rakitha Rajapakshe in ‘Harak Kata’ case

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has filed a revision petition before the Colombo High Court, seeking to overturn the Colombo Magistrate’s Court’s decision to grant bail to three suspects, including Rakitha Rajapakshe, in connection with an alleged bribery case involving the wife of notorious drug trafficker Nandun Chinthaka Wickramaratne, alias ‘Harak Kata’.

The petition is scheduled to be considered by the Colombo High Court today (30).

The three suspects, Rakitha Rajapakshe, Charitha Abeysinghe and Waruna Handige Aruna Chathuranga, had previously been remanded over allegations of accepting a bribe from Harak Kata’s wife before being granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

Rakitha Rajapakshe is the son of former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.

According to the Bribery Commission, the allegations relate to a sum of Rs. 120 million allegedly demanded and obtained from the wife of the suspected organised criminal to facilitate assistance.
