Pilot Project to Issue Disability Identification Cards Launched in Kaduwela

The initiative is being implemented by the National Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities, under the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, following a decision by the National Council for Persons with Disabilities.

Under the project, expert committees collected relevant information from persons with disabilities and assessed the nature and severity of their disabilities.

The identification cards are expected to provide several benefits, including scientifically identifying the nature and severity of disabilities, facilitating targeted service delivery based on individual needs, and referring cardholders to appropriate support services.

The initiative is also expected to help persons with disabilities access priority services and facilities in areas such as healthcare and banking, while improving accessibility and ensuring they receive the necessary assistance when accessing public services.

Arrangements have been made to officially distribute the disability identification cards prepared under the pilot project at the national celebration marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3.

Among those present at the launch were National Council for Persons with Disabilities members Ashoka Bandula Weerawardena and Tikiri Kumara Jayawardena, disability specialists, Assistant Director of the National Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities Sakunthala Ratiyala, Kaduwela Assistant Divisional Secretary Dhammika Saddhasena, Chief Medical Officer of the Kaduwela Public Health Office Dr. Chandana Pathberiya, and social services officers.
