SJB Raises Concerns Over Shortage of Chlorine and Water Treatment Chemicals

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) spokesperson Niroshan Padukka has raised concerns over an alleged shortage of chlorine and other water treatment chemicals at the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, warning that the situation could affect the supply of safe drinking water.

Speaking at an SJB media briefing in Colombo on November 1, Padukka said the Water Board was making substantial profits and had millions of rupees deposited in banks, yet was facing shortages of essential chemicals used to purify drinking water.

He claimed that unless the Government intervened and arranged direct imports of chlorine, the authorities could be forced to use expired stocks.

"Providing drinking water is the responsibility of the Government," he said, calling for urgent action to address the shortage.

Responding to questions from journalists, Padukka described the Government's performance as reflecting its maximum capacity, despite having been in office for nearly two years. He said the President should first convene a round-table discussion to address the country's issues.

He also raised concerns over alleged missing funds, questioning the responsibility of Finance Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake in relation to matters falling under his purview.

Padukka further claimed that a list of individuals critical of the party had been requested at a meeting of active party members held at a hotel in Kesbewa.

Making further allegations, he referred to individuals whom he associated with what he described as the coal scandal and the container scandal, claiming that one had become the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa while another was now close to the President.

He also alleged that investors were withdrawing from Sri Lanka, claiming that the only institution capable of attracting investment to the country was "Pelawatte PLC".

Padukka made a further remark concerning the Speaker, alleging that the Speaker had three houses described as "Ramya Suramya Subha".
