Rs. 1.104 Billion Ratmalana–Kandawala Road Development Project Launched
· Sri Lanka
A major development project to upgrade the Ratmalana–Kandawala Road at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.104 billion was officially launched today under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
The project has been initiated to address recurring flooding in surrounding areas, particularly during rainy weather, due to the inadequate capacity of the existing drainage system.
The project is being implemented by the Western Province Road Development Authority under the Ministry of Roads and Transport of the Western Provincial Council, with funding from the Western Province Development Fund.
Under the project, unauthorised structures obstructing the drainage system will be removed, existing culverts and bridges will be reconstructed to meet current requirements, and drainage facilities will be upgraded to improve rainwater discharge.
The initiative aims to provide sustainable solutions to the longstanding flooding problems experienced by residents in the area.
According to the project information, this is the largest development project undertaken by a Provincial Council to date.
Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof, Members of Parliament Devananda Suraveera and Samanmali Gunasinghe, the Chief Secretary of the Western Province, ministry secretaries, chairpersons, directors, mayors, local government representatives and other officials attended the launch ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Western Province Chief Secretary Pradeep Pushpakumara and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya spoke about the development initiatives being undertaken by the provincial administration.
The Prime Minister stated that three major projects had already been launched and emphasised that none of them had been financed through loans, but were being implemented using the province's own funds.
Members of Parliament Samanmali Gunasinghe and Devananda Suraveera also addressed the gathering.
