Merrill J. Fernando: The Sri Lankan Entrepreneur Who Took Ceylon Tea to the World

Merrill J. Fernando was one of Sri Lanka’s most influential entrepreneurs, best known for founding Dilmah, a tea brand that brought the distinctive taste of Ceylon tea to consumers around the world. His journey is an inspiring example of how determination, a clear vision and a commitment to quality can transform a local product into an international business.

From a Tea Taster to a Business Visionary

Born in 1930 in Sri Lanka, Merrill J. Fernando developed his career in the tea industry at a time when the global tea trade was largely controlled by companies outside the countries that produced the tea.

Through his experience as a tea taster and his understanding of the industry, he recognised an opportunity for Sri Lanka to benefit more directly from its own tea production. Rather than simply supplying tea to international companies, he wanted to build a brand that would allow consumers to recognise and appreciate tea grown in Sri Lanka.

It was an ambitious idea. Establishing an international brand required patience, investment and a commitment to maintaining consistent quality.

The Birth of Dilmah

In 1988, Fernando founded Dilmah, naming the brand after his sons, Dilhan and Malik. His vision was to offer authentic Ceylon tea while keeping the focus on the quality and origins of the product.

One of the principles that distinguished Dilmah was its emphasis on single-origin tea. The brand promoted the idea that tea should be appreciated for its natural character and the place where it was grown.

Building recognition in international markets was not an overnight success. Fernando had to convince consumers and retailers that a Sri Lankan tea brand could compete with established names. Through persistence and a long-term focus on quality, Dilmah gradually developed an international customer base.

The business helped strengthen the visibility of Ceylon tea and demonstrated that Sri Lankan companies could create products with a recognisable identity in global markets.

Business with a Purpose

Fernando’s ambitions extended beyond commercial success. He believed that businesses should contribute to the communities and people who helped make their success possible.

Through the MJF Charitable Foundation, established in 2002, he supported community development initiatives, including programmes for disadvantaged children, education, livelihoods and people with disabilities.

His approach connected entrepreneurship with social responsibility. For him, building a successful company was not only about increasing sales but also about creating opportunities for others.

A Lasting Legacy

Merrill J. Fernando passed away in July 2023 at the age of 93. However, the company and the business philosophy he established continue to form an important part of Sri Lanka’s entrepreneurial story.

His journey offers several lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs: believe in the value of local products, build a brand around quality, remain patient when entering competitive markets and consider the wider impact of business decisions.

Merrill J. Fernando showed that a company founded in Sri Lanka could earn recognition around the world without losing its connection to its origins.

His legacy is a reminder that entrepreneurship is not simply about selling a product. It is about creating something meaningful, earning people’s trust and building a business that can continue to make a difference for generations.
