Aaliyah Latheef: The 9-Year-Old Maldivian Surfing Sensation Making History

Maldivian surfing prodigy Aaliyah Latheef, affectionately known as the “Little Saltwater Princess,” is making waves on the international surfing scene after achieving a remarkable victory in Sri Lanka at just nine years old.

Aaliyah captured international attention in September 2026 when she won the Women’s Open category at the SFSL Surf Championships 2026 – Arugam Bay Series in Sri Lanka. Her outstanding performance against experienced adult competitors marked a major milestone in her young career and established her as one of the most promising young surfers in the region.

In a particularly impressive achievement, Aaliyah defeated Sri Lanka’s reigning Junior Women’s Champion, Sayuni Anjana, to secure the title. Her victory was reported as a historic milestone for Maldivian surfing, highlighting the growing international presence of young athletes from the island nation.

Making History at Just Eight

Aaliyah’s international success followed another significant achievement in 2025, when she became the Maldives’ first Junior Women’s Surfing Champion. At just eight years old, she won the Under-18 division at the inaugural National Junior Surfing Championships, demonstrating remarkable confidence and ability against older competitors.

The achievement represented an important moment for junior surfing in the Maldives and showcased the potential of the country’s emerging generation of female athletes.

A Life Shaped by the Ocean

Aaliyah’s connection with the ocean began at an exceptionally young age. Raised by a surfing mother and a father who works as a dive instructor, she grew up surrounded by the sea and an active ocean lifestyle.

Her family lived a nomadic life aboard their safari boat, The Seafarer, giving her opportunities to explore different coastal environments and develop her relationship with the water. She reportedly began surfing at Chickens Surf Point in the Maldives when she was just three years old.

Those early experiences helped lay the foundation for her development as a young competitive surfer, with the ocean becoming an integral part of her childhood.

Training for an International Future

Representing the Maldives national women’s surfing team, Aaliyah continues to develop her skills through training at surf destinations around the world, including Hawaii. She also practises at popular Maldivian breaks such as Thulusdhoo and Cokes Surf Point.

Her commitment to the sport, combined with her competitive achievements at such a young age, has attracted attention from the regional surfing community. While many young athletes are only beginning to discover competitive sport, Aaliyah is already gaining experience in international competitions and facing seasoned surfers.

Her ultimate ambition is to compete on the World Surf League (WSL) circuit, a goal that reflects her determination to take her surfing career to the global stage.

An Inspiration for Young Athletes

Aaliyah Latheef’s journey is a testament to the opportunities that can emerge when natural talent, family support and dedication come together. Her achievements have also brought greater visibility to Maldivian surfing, particularly the participation of young girls in a sport closely connected to the country’s island culture.

From riding her first waves at three to winning an international Women’s Open title at nine, the “Little Saltwater Princess” is building an impressive sporting story.

As she continues to train, compete and pursue her ambitions, Aaliyah represents a promising new generation of Maldivian surfing talent. Her journey is only beginning, but her achievements have already made her a young athlete to watch in the years ahead.
