Ground Theory puts Sri Lankan Coffee in the Spotlight

This International Coffee Day, Ground Theory Coffee Roasters is inviting coffee lovers to discover the character of Sri Lankan coffee. With locally grown Arabica and small-batch roasting in Colombo, the company is bringing a homegrown perspective to a global celebration.

Roasting since 2020, Ground Theory works closely with green coffee producers to select quality lots from Sri Lanka’s central highlands, where its Arabica grows at elevations above 1,200 metres. Each lot is chosen for its quality and character, then roasted with care to bring out what makes it distinctive.

The result is freshly roasted, 100% Sri Lankan Arabica for wholesale and retail customers, whether they prepare it as espresso or filter coffee. The current range includes both wet-processed and naturally processed Arabica, giving coffee drinkers a starting point for exploring the variety within Sri Lankan coffee.

“We want people to be curious about Sri Lankan coffee and to appreciate it for its quality,” says the management of Ground Theory (Pvt) Ltd. “That starts with the beans we select and continues through the roast and the way the coffee is brewed.”

A recent move to a larger property marks a further step in the company’s development. The expanded roastery provides more room to respond to growing demand and manage supply, while maintaining its focus on quality, consistency and small-batch roasting.

Ground Theory is backed by the management of Cauldron & Co, the team behind THE CAULDRON. That connection gives coffee drinkers a place to experience the product: THE CAULDRON, in partnership with Ground Theory Coffee Roasters, proudly serves freshly roasted Sri Lankan coffee.

The company also works closely with cafés, restaurants and barista academies, offering personalised support that can include barista training and grinder calibration. Through its partners, Ground Theory provides equipment maintenance support to customers, helping them take care of the machines they rely on for daily service. Together, these services help businesses get the best from the coffee they serve.

Looking ahead, Ground Theory is working on new coffee profiles to complement its existing wet-processed and naturally processed Arabica. The team is also exploring a different side of Sri Lankan coffee, with a new project taking shape at the roastery.

“We have more we want to explore, and new profiles are part of those plans,” the management adds. “One project in particular is taking us in a different direction. We look forward to sharing it when it is ready.”

Whether enjoyed at our partner cafés including THE CAULDRON at Stratford Avenue, Colombo 6 or brewed at home, a cup of Ground Theory offers a distinctly local way to mark International Coffee Day and get to know Sri Lankan coffee a little better.
