891 illegal firearms seized by police so far this year

A total of 891 illegal firearms have been confiscated by law enforcement authorities across Sri Lanka between January 1 and September 17 this year, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced during a press briefing.

The seized weaponry includes automatic firearms, pistols, revolvers, and improvised weapons uncovered during targeted special operations carried out by the Police Department, the Police Special Task Force (STF), and intelligence units. Dr. Jayatissa noted that these measures are integral to curbing underworld violence and gun-related crimes.

The minister stated that public security forces have intensified surveillance and search operations across high-risk areas to apprehend illicit arms syndicates and eliminate illegal firearms circulating within civilian communities.
