Young Sri Lankan Innovator wins big at Australia's biggest Tech Awards

Sri Lankan researcher and innovator Shanelle Tennekoon has earned national recognition in Australia after winning two major honours at the 2026 WAITTA INCITE Awards, one of the country's leading technology awards programs.

Held on 17 July 2026, the awards celebrate outstanding achievements in information technology, telecommunications and digital innovation across Australia.

Shanelle received awards in the Research & Development Solution of the Year and Diversity & Digital Inclusion Solution of the Year categories for SmartWheel an AI-powered guidance system designed to improve mobility, navigation and accessibility for wheelchair users with multiple disabilities.

The achievement marks a proud milestone for the Sri Lankan community in Australia and highlights the growing contribution of Sri Lankan researchers to innovation, technology and inclusive solutions on the global stage.

Speaking after the awards, Shanelle said receiving the two honours was a great privilege and reflected the dedication behind the project as well as the support of those who contributed to its success.
