Young driver killed in Tapping smash, as police confirm cyclist has died in separate alleged hit-and-run in Northam

A young woman has died in a devastating car crash involving a truck on Monday. The 20-year-old’s Hyundai Veloster collided with a white Iveco truck at the intersection of Pinjar Rd and Yandella Pr in Tapping, a suburb of Perth’s north, about 6.45am. She suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Joondalup Health Campus where she died. The male driver of the truck, 26, was not injured.

The tragedy comes as police revealed a cyclist critically injured in an alleged hit-and-run had died in hospital. Police said the male rider, 65, was travelling eastbound across Peel Terrace Bridge in Northam, 100km northeast of Perth, about 12.25am on Saturday, September 12, when he was injured. He was rushed to Northam Regional Hospital with critical injuries and transferred to Royal Perth Hospital. Sadly, police confirmed on Monday the rider had died.

A 51-year-old Northam man allegedly behind the wheel of a Nissan Navara has been charged with failing to stop and assist, failing to report an incident, and having no authority to drive. 7NEWS previously revealed WA’s road toll is the state’s deadliest in almost two decades.
