“Who Removed Ven. Gnanasara Thera’s Robes?” Sarvajana Balaya Questions Government

Sarvajana Balaya Parliamentarian Dr. Channa Jayasumana has questioned the circumstances under which Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera arrived at prison wearing civilian clothing.

Speaking at a Sarvajana Balaya media briefing, Jayasumana questioned why the Buddhist monk had appeared at the prison in civilian attire and referred to a statement by Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa that the clothing was worn in accordance with prison regulations.

Jayasumana said Gnanasara Thera had previously been taken to prison from the prison premises as well, and claimed that the monk had stated that the removal of his robes was not done with his consent.

“We are deeply saddened by this as a political party,” Jayasumana said.

He recalled that Sri Lanka had been ruled by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, and claimed that even during those periods, such an incident had not occurred.

Jayasumana also expressed surprise at what he described as the Opposition’s silence over the matter and questioned the response of the Opposition Leader.
