UNP Calls for Greater Recognition of Buddhism While Protecting Religious Freedom

The United National Party (UNP) has called for greater recognition of Buddhism while ensuring that all other religions are protected and encouraged, during a media briefing addressing religious affairs and the country's current challenges.

Speaking at the briefing, Nipun Amarathunga, a lawyer, said the government should promote all religions while giving Buddhism its constitutionally recognised foremost place. He stressed that people of other faiths should also enjoy religious freedom.

Amarathunga said the party had proposed submitting recommendations on religious affairs and establishing a committee with the participation of the Mahanayake Theros to consider the proposals. He also warned of a difficult period ahead for the country, expressing concern that the public could face severe economic hardship.

He appealed to young people to join efforts to address the country's challenges.

Meanwhile, Pasindu Gunaratne, Chairman of the UNP Youth Front, said the party was working on its proposed policy document amid the country's current difficulties.

He reiterated that Sri Lanka's constitutional framework should be respected by giving Buddhism its foremost place while safeguarding the rights of other religions. He also emphasised the importance of properly upholding and practising the teachings of Theravada Buddhism.

The UNP representatives made these remarks while outlining the party's position on religious policy and the country's future direction.
