Socialist People’s Front Holds Protest in Colombo Demanding Cost-of-Living Relief
· Sri Lanka
The Socialist People’s Front organised a public protest in Colombo on Thursday, calling on the government to address the rising cost of living, provide relief through the national budget and withdraw what protesters described as repressive laws.
The demonstrators marched from Technical Junction in Maradana to Colombo Fort, before staging a protest outside Colombo Fort Railway Station.
During the demonstration, protesters called for an end to what they described as the International Monetary Fund’s “stranglehold” on the country and demanded the withdrawal of the proposed anti-terrorism legislation.
They also called on the government to introduce a living wage to help workers cope with rising living expenses and provide greater economic relief through the budget.
The protest focused on the cost of living, economic policy, workers’ wages and concerns over proposed security legislation. The organisers urged the government to respond to these demands.
