· Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has won the Visitors’ Choice award for Leading Wellness Destination at the 2026 South Asian Travel Awards (SATA), strengthening the country’s international profile as a destination for wellness tourism.
The award was presented at the tenth edition of SATA, held on October 8 at Barceló Nasandhura Malé in the Maldives. Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, M. Rizvi Hassen, received the accolade on behalf of the country, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The recognition places Sri Lanka among the destinations acknowledged by travellers through the Visitors’ Choice category, which reflects votes cast by people from around the world.
Sri Lanka’s wellness tourism offering draws on its long-established Ayurveda traditions, natural landscapes and range of experiences centred on relaxation, health and well-being. These features continue to form an important part of the country’s tourism proposition, appealing to visitors seeking experiences beyond conventional leisure travel.
Wellness Tourism in the Spotlight
Wellness tourism has become an important segment of the global travel industry, with visitors increasingly seeking experiences that combine relaxation, nature, traditional healing practices and personal well-being.
Sri Lanka’s Ayurveda heritage provides a distinctive foundation for this market. Traditional wellness treatments, holistic therapies and nature-based experiences complement the island’s beaches, forests, mountains and cultural attractions.
The Visitors’ Choice award recognises Sri Lanka as a destination within this broader tourism landscape. Individual hotels, resorts and service providers were assessed separately across other categories of the awards.
The recognition also provides an opportunity to highlight the diversity of Sri Lanka’s tourism offering and its potential to attract visitors interested in wellness-focused holidays.
Celebrating South Asian Tourism
Established in 2016, the South Asian Travel Awards brings together tourism and hospitality businesses from six countries: Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
The 2026 ceremony marked the awards’ tenth edition, bringing together industry representatives and businesses from across the region. Categories covered a broad range of tourism-related sectors, including hotels, resorts, travel agencies, tour operators, airlines and destinations.
According to the organisers, the awards combine public participation with professional assessments conducted by a multinational judging panel. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that more than two million online votes were recorded across this year’s awards.
Other Visitors’ Choice recognitions included the Maldives for adventure and Bhutan for heritage, while SriLankan Airlines received recognition as the leading international airline.
Strengthening Sri Lanka’s Global Appeal
The wellness destination award adds to Sri Lanka’s efforts to promote its tourism strengths in international markets. With its combination of traditional healing practices, natural beauty and diverse visitor experiences, the country has opportunities to develop wellness tourism as a distinctive component of its broader travel industry.
The recognition at SATA 2026 offers further international visibility for Sri Lanka’s wellness identity and acknowledges the appeal of its tourism offering among travellers.
As competition among destinations intensifies, awards based on visitor participation can provide an additional platform for promoting national tourism assets and attracting interest from potential visitors.
For Sri Lanka, the Visitors’ Choice award represents a positive endorsement of its position in South Asia’s wellness tourism market and an opportunity to build on the island’s established traditions and natural advantages.
