Sri Lanka, Thailand Set to Sign Labour Pact

Cabinet approval has been granted for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on labour cooperation between Sri Lanka and Thailand, along with a separate agreement on the employment of Sri Lankan workers in Thailand.
The proposal was submitted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism.
The proposed agreements are expected to establish formal cooperation between the relevant authorities of the two countries in relation to labour and employment matters.
According to the Government, the agreements are intended to facilitate the recruitment and deployment of Sri Lankan workers to Thailand in a transparent, efficient and regulated manner.
In addition, the proposed framework aims to safeguard the legal rights, welfare and protection of Sri Lankan workers employed in Thailand.
The agreements are also expected to contribute towards preventing human trafficking and other forms of labour exploitation.
