Sri Lanka Strengthens Power Security Amid Dry Weather Concerns

Sri Lanka is stepping up measures to safeguard the country’s electricity supply as prevailing dry weather conditions raise concerns over additional pressure on the energy sector.

Energy Minister Anura Karunatilaka said the government has initiated several measures to strengthen the national power system and ensure energy security amid potential challenges caused by prolonged dry weather.

A key initiative is the introduction of a 160-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which is expected to be connected to the national grid between October and December this year.

The Minister also said procurement is nearing completion for a further 250 megawatts of battery energy storage capacity. Tenders have already been called for the project, which is expected to provide additional support to the national electricity system.

Meanwhile, the government is advancing plans to increase renewable energy generation. Arrangements are underway to call tenders for 150 megawatts of ground-mounted solar power projects, with the tender process already initiated.

A separate programme is also being planned to encourage operators of large rooftop solar systems, particularly installations exceeding 300 kilowatts, to adopt battery storage facilities.

The government is further considering tax concessions for selected investors to encourage the adoption of battery technology and accelerate investment in clean energy.

The measures are aimed at improving the resilience of Sri Lanka’s electricity system while supporting the country’s transition towards greater renewable energy use.
