Traffic Violations to Cost Drivers Points Under New Pilot Project

Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake has announced that a six month pilot project for the driver demerit points system, which deducts points for traffic violations, will commence in October.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry of Transport this morning (28), the Minister stated that the programme is expected to run until 31 March next year.

The Ministry has decided to introduce the “Demerit System” with the aim of reducing road accidents across the country.

Under the proposed system, drivers will be allocated a fixed number of points valid for a period of two years, with points deducted for traffic law violations committed on the roads.

The Ministry also plans to implement the system digitally, while expanding the existing online platforms introduced for the payment of traffic fines.
