The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) raised questions about the government’s commitment to eliminating corruption, focusing on the coal controversy and allegations of financial misconduct, at a media briefing held on October 12, 2026.
Lawyer Yohan Ariyawansa, the party’s Kandy District organiser, questioned whether the government had lived up to its promise of being free from corruption.
Referring to the coal controversy, Ariyawansa criticised the government’s handling of the issue and alleged that it was attempting to conceal wrongdoing while misleading the public.
He also raised concerns about the alleged misuse of public funds by the President, calling attention to the need for accountability in the management of state finances.
Ravi Amarasinghe Comments on the Speaker
Ravi Amarasinghe, identified as the Colombo District convenor of the Association of Professional Lecturers, also addressed the briefing.
Commenting on the Speaker of Parliament, Amarasinghe said the Speaker had also set a world record, drawing a comparison with Romesh Tharanga.
However, the briefing notes did not specify the nature of the alleged record or provide further details about the comparison.
The remarks came amid continuing political debate over the coal procurement controversy and accountability within the government.
