Senani Wijesena continues to shine from Sydney
· Sri Lanka
Singer, songwriter and composer Senani Wijesena, who is based in Sydney, Australia, and the daughter of acclaimed actress Jeevarani Kurukulasuriya, continues to be in the spotlight with her own original creations.
Her current release, ‘In the Flow’, is the first song she wrote for her upcoming album, ‘Music of the Mirror’. It was written on a beach in Byron Bay, Australia, sitting on the sand in front of the ocean.
An R&B track with jazz and Latin influences, ‘In the Flow’ is centred around the love and connection Senani shares with her once-in-a-lifetime twin flame — telepathy, astral travelling, synchronicities and a shared energy frequency.
The music video features Jaime Jesus, owner and choreographer at Latin Dance Australia. It was filmed in Sydney, in a vintage home with chandeliers, and a grand piano, to give the clip a retro feel.
Referring to this setup, Senani said: “There is something so otherworldly about a twin flame connection — it feels like a vintage house, rooted, historic, and beautiful, all at once. That’s the exact emotion I wanted to capture on this stone veranda in my favourite flowing dress, bringing my new song ‘In the Flow’ to life.”
She added: “If you need a new track for your mood playlist, ‘In the Flow’ is waiting for you. It’s smooth R&B storytelling, wrapped up in rich jazz chords, written directly from the heart about unconditional, never-ending love.”
Meanwhile, Senani recently filmed scenes in Colombo for the music video of her upcoming second Sinhala song, ‘Maayamkaariniye’, which is the translated version of her English song ‘Voodoo Girl’. The clip was filmed by Nerun Kalpajith and features choreography by local dance group Island Stompers. The song and video for ‘Maayamkaariniye’ will be released in November.
The Sri Lankan-born singer has been involved in Sydney’s underground R&B, soul and funk scene for many years. Blending sensual pop and soul with exotic Eastern touches, drawn from her Sri Lankan roots — including tabla and sitar — she has created a sound that is both contemporary and deeply spiritual.
While building her momentum in Australia with her own creations, she stepped onto the international stage with her single ‘Voodoo Girl’ and her album ‘Infinity’, showcasing her sassy vocals, dynamic dance style and fearless artistry.
Proudly Sri Lankan at heart, Senani continues to carry her homeland onto the international music arena while working from Australia.
