Sanjaya Mahawatta Says Opposition Unity Will Not Guarantee Election Victory

Civil Intelligence Front representative Sanjaya Mahawatta has claimed that even if the United National Party (UNP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) form an alliance, they will not be able to secure an election victory.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, Mahawatta referred to a recent statement by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who had reportedly said that an alliance between the parties would not necessarily guarantee victory.

Mahawatta claimed that Wickremesinghe was also feeling the pressure of the current political situation.

He further predicted that individuals he described as corrupt would eventually be sent to prison, adding that the country should build additional prisons to accommodate them.

Describing the present period as a historic golden era, he said such a period of progress had never been seen in the country's history.

Commenting on criticism surrounding the Ruwanwelisaya in Anuradhapura, Mahawatta accused Opposition groups of spreading false information about the sacred site.

He said the development of urban areas, including sacred locations, was part of the Government's programme, but claimed that criticism was being directed at the authorities whenever development work was undertaken at religious sites.

He also said that people were free to express their views democratically regarding proposed new legislation.
