Queensland Police come down on teen accused of publishing video of alleged security guard assault

A teenager has been “dealt with” by police investigating the brutal alleged bashing of a shopping centre security guard. Queensland authorities said the Upper Coomera 13-year-old played no part in 66-year-old Chris Price’s serious injuries at Westfield Coomera, on the Gold Coast, but the boy did catch their attention under Youth Justice Act provisions when he shared footage of the alleged attack. “Publishing footage of certain offending behaviour can constitute a criminal offence and we want young people to understand that their actions online can have serious consequences,” Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said on Friday. “If you witness an assault, your first priority should be your own safety and the safety of others.”

Police said Price was approached by a group about 6.40pm on Tuesday before allegedly being assaulted by two young males and sustaining a head injury when he fell to the ground. He was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition. A 16-year-old Springfield Lakes boy and a 15-year-old Eagleby boy were charged. The older teen was granted bail on Thursday while the younger boy, who was already out on bail at the time of the alleged assault, remains in custody. A further bail application for him is expected on Monday. “Investigations remain ongoing, and police continue to appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information or vision to come forward,” Queensland Police said.
