Fishing and Naval communities warned of rough seas, strong winds

The Department of Meteorology says the deep depression that was over the Bay of Bengal has moved inland over India, crossing the coast of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha.

Under the influence of this system, heavy thundershowers are expected over the sea areas of the West central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal, with winds occasionally increasing up to 70-80 kmph, and the sea conditions in these areas will become very rough.

Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the sea areas in between 10°N and 22°N latitude and 82°E and 90°E longitude until further notice, with those operating in those sea areas advised to move away from the affected sea areas.

Naval and fishing communities engaging in activities over these sea areas are advised to be vigilant and be attentive to the future forecasts issued by the department of meteorology in this regard.

Accordingly, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambanthota via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle today (25). Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other sea areas during the evening or night.

Winds will be South-westerly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 55-65 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Negombo via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and Puttalam, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. The winds can be increased up to 50-55 kmph in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Negombo to Galle via Beruwala.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Negombo via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and Puttalam, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be very rough at times. The sea areas off the coasts extending from Negombo to Galle via Beruwala will be rough at times.

The wave height may increase about (2.0 – 2.5) meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
