Prisoners’ Rights Committee Seeks Human Rights Commission Intervention Over Gnanasara Thera’s UN Appeal

The Prisoners’ Rights Protection Committee has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, alleging that prison authorities and the Ministry of Justice are obstructing an appeal intended to be submitted to the United Nations on behalf of incarcerated Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera.

The committee visited the Human Rights Commission on Thursday and handed over a letter seeking intervention over the alleged restrictions on submitting the appeal.

According to the committee, the appeal is intended to be forwarded to the United Nations on behalf of Gnanasara Thera, who is currently in prison. The committee alleges that prison officials and the relevant ministry are preventing the submission of the document.

The committee said it approached the Human Rights Commission to bring the matter to its attention and seek action regarding the alleged obstruction.

Attorney Danushka Silva and Nandimal Silva, convenor of the Prisoners’ Rights Protection Committee, were among those involved in the initiative.

The commission’s response to the complaint was not included in the information provided.
