Perth man charged over alleged threat to shoot federal government advisor

A man will front court accused of threatening to shoot a federal government advisor. Australian Federal Police (AFP) said they were tipped off about a chilling social media post on August 12 before they raided a residence in Morley, Perth, on Wednesday.

A 68-year-old man has been charged with one count of using a carriage service in a way that is menacing. If convicted, that offence carries a maximum penalty of five years behind bars. The accused was granted strict conditional bail and will be back in Perth Magistrates Court on October 28.

The AFP said the investigation that followed the tip-off was carried out by its National Security Investigations team. That unit was launched in October, 2025 to target those “causing high levels of harm to Australia’s social cohesion, including the targeting of the Jewish community”. In June, a WA teen narrowly avoided jail after threatening to kill NSW Premier Chris Minns and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The ominous message was sent to Minns over Instagram.
