Joseph Stalin Alleges Political Interference in Western Province School Appointments
· Sri Lanka
Speaking at a media briefing organised by the Ceylon Teachers’ Union, Stalin claimed that political interests associated with the ruling National People’s Power (NPP) were influencing appointments within the province’s education system.
He alleged that Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof had attempted to withdraw from his role amid developments in the provincial education administration, and claimed that NPP MP Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi was exerting significant influence over the management of education in the province.
Stalin further alleged that appointments were being made according to the preferences of political authorities, with individuals considered close to them being selected for acting positions.
He also criticised the government’s proposed new legislation, claiming that it could be used to suppress trade unions and restrict their activities.
Turning to the proposed education reforms, Stalin alleged that the government was attempting to impose changes on the education system without adequate consultation or consensus among relevant stakeholders.
The Ceylon Teachers’ Union has repeatedly raised concerns about political involvement in education administration and the implementation of reforms. The allegations made at the media briefing highlight continuing tensions over appointments, trade union rights and the direction of education policy in Sri Lanka.
