Joint Opposition Meets Trade Union Leaders to Discuss PSTA Bill

Former ministers G. L. Peiris, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Siripala Gamlath, Duminda Dissanayake and Vajira Abeywardena were among those who attended the meeting, alongside trade union leaders including Saman Rathnapriya and Ananda Palitha.

Speaking at the discussion, Professor G. L. Peiris expressed concern that the proposed legislation could restrict the ability of trade unions to organise protests and engage in demonstrations.

He also raised concerns about the potential impact of the bill on media freedom, claiming that it could limit journalists’ ability to ask questions.

Trade union representatives Saman Rathnapriya and Ananda Palitha also addressed the gathering, contributing their views on the proposed legislation.

The meeting focused on concerns raised by opposition politicians and trade union representatives regarding the possible effects of the PSTA Bill on trade union rights, public demonstrations and media freedom.

The specific provisions of the bill and the concerns raised by participants would need to be examined against the text of the proposed legislation to determine their legal implications.
