ICC announces sanctions for Jaiswal & Asitha

India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando have each been fined 25% of their match fees following their heated confrontation during the second Test in Colombo, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced.

Both players were also handed one demerit point each after being found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee or another person during an international match.

The incident occurred during the 17th over of India’s first innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal.

According to the ICC, Jaiswal walked toward Fernando and the pair exchanged words before Fernando moved his head toward the Indian batter. Jaiswal then leaned in, resulting in their heads making contact.

Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Andy Pycroft, meaning formal hearings were not required.

The ICC said neither player had committed a previous offence during the preceding 24-month period. (Newswire)
