Heavy Rainfall of Up to 150mm Expected in Five Provinces

Sri Lanka is expected to experience increased rainfall over the coming days as a low-pressure area may develop over the southeastern Bay of Bengal, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Acting meteorologist Malith Fernando said showers or thundershowers could occur intermittently across most parts of the island, with some areas expected to receive heavy rainfall.

Rainfall of around 100–150 millimetres is possible in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces. Some locations in other parts of the country may receive rainfall exceeding 75 millimetres. <Cite refs={["turn301498search0","turn301498search1"]}/>

Public Urged to Follow Weather Updates

The developing weather system is also expected to increase rainfall over the deep and shallow sea areas surrounding Sri Lanka over the next several days.

The Department of Meteorology has urged the public, including fishing and naval communities, to closely monitor official forecasts and advisories concerning the system.

People have also been advised to take precautions against temporary localised strong winds and lightning that may accompany thundershowers.

The public is encouraged to remain alert as weather conditions develop over the coming days.
