Former Minister G. L. Peiris Leaves Bribery Commission After Giving Statement on Shangri-La Hotel Investment

Former Minister G. L. Peiris left the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) at around 11:30 a.m. on October 20 after appearing to provide a statement.

Peiris was summoned to provide information regarding discussions about an investment in the Shangri-La Hotel project during his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking to the media after leaving the commission, Peiris said he served as Foreign Affairs Minister when Mahinda Rajapaksa was President. During that period, a discussion was held with him concerning an investment in the Shangri-La Hotel, and he informed the then President about the matter.

He said investigators had questioned him to obtain further information regarding the discussion.

Peiris also expressed his hope that the Bribery Commission would investigate allegations of corruption without political motives.

“If someone has committed an offence, they should be punished,” he said, reiterating that those found guilty of wrongdoing should face the appropriate consequences.
