First project under 300MW solar programme launched in Veyangoda

Sri Lanka has officially inaugurated the inaugural installation of a landmark renewable energy initiative designed to contribute 300 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity to the national electricity grid. The launching ceremony took place in Veyangoda, bringing together energy officials, engineers, and project partners.

The 300MW solar development scheme is part of broader state initiatives to reduce dependence on costly imported fossil fuels and advance national targets for clean and sustainable energy generation. Authorities stated that incorporating distributed solar plants will strengthen grid reliability and stabilize generation costs.

Officials from the Ministry of Power and Energy noted that expedited timelines have been established for the subsequent phases of the project, with regional installations planned across several provinces over the coming months.
