From Jaffna to Australian Healthcare

Originally from Jaffna, Dr Phillips is a former student of St John’s College, Jaffna, from the 1989 batch. He is the son of the late Dr Phillips, who was well known in the city for operating Phillips Hospital on Main Street.

Throughout his career, he has earned respect for his commitment to patient care, community wellbeing and the development of future generations of doctors. His work reflects the important role general practitioners play in providing accessible healthcare, building lasting relationships with patients and supporting communities through different stages of life.

Recognition of Professional Excellence

The GP of the Year award recognises Dr Phillips’ contribution to general practice and his dedication to the people he serves.

RACGP Tasmania Chair Dr Toby Gardner praised his professionalism, generosity and exceptional commitment to the profession, describing the recognition as thoroughly deserved.

General practitioners occupy a central position in healthcare, often serving as the first point of contact for patients and coordinating ongoing medical care. Their work requires not only clinical expertise but also compassion, communication and a strong understanding of the communities they serve.

Dr Phillips’ recognition highlights these qualities and acknowledges the value of sustained service in the medical profession.

A Proud Moment for the Tamil Community

The achievement carries significance beyond professional recognition, celebrating the contribution of a Sri Lankan Tamil professional to Australia’s healthcare sector.

His journey from Jaffna to becoming Tasmania’s GP of the Year reflects decades of commitment to medicine and community service. His appearance in traditional Tamil attire at the awards ceremony also added cultural significance to the occasion.

For the Sri Lankan Tamil community in Australia and those in his hometown of Jaffna, the honour represents an opportunity to celebrate a medical professional whose career has been shaped by dedication to patient care and service.
