Development Officers’ Union Questions Government’s ‘Two Years of Progress’ Claim
· Sri Lanka
Dhammika Munasinghe, General Secretary of the United Development Officers’ Union, has questioned the government’s claim of progress after two years in office, while raising concerns over the confusion surrounding the recently released teacher recruitment examination results and the government’s failure to provide jobs for unemployed graduates.
Speaking on the issue, Munasinghe said the release of the teacher recruitment examination results had created considerable confusion among candidates who sat for the examination.
He questioned the government’s claims of success, noting that the President had been making statements across the country under the slogan “Two Years for the Government, Good for the Country.”
“Although this government has completed two years in office, we want to ask who has actually benefited,” he said.
Munasinghe also highlighted the financial difficulties faced by public sector employees, stating that government workers were demanding an interim allowance of Rs. 25,000 because their current salaries were insufficient to meet their living expenses.
He claimed that the cost of living had increased on seven occasions, placing an additional burden on working people.
He further criticised the adjustment of allowances for Members of Parliament in line with rising fuel prices, alleging that ordinary working people had not received even a small increase in their allowances to help them cope with the rising cost of living.
Turning to the issue of graduate unemployment, Munasinghe said President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had included a promise to provide employment opportunities for unemployed graduates in his election manifesto.
He called on the government to stop misleading job seekers with repeated promises of appointments and urged the authorities to take concrete action to address the concerns of unemployed graduates and those awaiting recruitment.
