Dengue cases could rise again in coming months, authorities warn

The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) has issued a nationwide warning regarding an anticipated rise in dengue fever cases over the final quarter of the year. Dr. Kapila Kannangara, Acting Director of the NDCU, stated that upcoming inter-monsoonal showers are expected to dramatically expand mosquito breeding habitats.

Surveillance data collected across major urban hubs, including the Western and Central Provinces, indicate high larval density in discarded receptacles, construction sites, and neglected roof gutters. Officials warned that sporadic showers followed by warm sunshine create the ideal environment for the Aedes mosquito life cycle.

The Ministry of Health plans to roll out island-wide dengue prevention weeks in collaboration with local councils, the armed forces, and public health inspectors. Legal action and fines will be levied against property owners who fail to clear domestic and commercial premises of potential mosquito breeding grounds.

Healthcare professionals have advised the public to seek prompt medical attention at government clinics if experiencing persistent high fever, joint pain, or vomiting, and to avoid self-medicating with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
