Complaint Filed with Bribery Commission Over Failure to Investigate Complaints Against IGP
· Sri Lanka
The convener of the Citizens’ Organisation, Sri Ravindra Nishshankar, has lodged a complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), alleging that complaints previously submitted against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) have not been investigated.
According to Nishshankar, approximately ten complaints have been lodged with the Bribery Commission against IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya. He stated that he had personally submitted two complaints, while the Civil Intelligence Front had also filed a complaint.
The complaints submitted by Nishshankar concern alleged irregularities in the supply of motorcycles to the police and suspicions surrounding investigations initiated by the IGP against police officers involved in the seizure of 472 kilograms of the drug commonly known as Ice from a container at the port. He alleged that the investigations raised suspicions about whether bribes had been accepted from drug traffickers.
Meanwhile, the Civil Intelligence Front has reportedly lodged a complaint regarding alleged irregularities in the tender process for supplying shoe-polishing services to police officers.
Nishshankar stated that, to his knowledge, investigations had not yet commenced into any of the complaints filed against the IGP.
He urged the commission to promptly initiate investigations into the complaints, citing the government's stated policy that “the law is equal for all.”
