Civil Society Representatives Back Government Bills, Say Opposition Should Propose Amendments
· Sri Lanka
Representatives of civil society organisations have expressed support for the government’s proposed legislation, arguing that the opposition should submit amendments to address any shortcomings rather than oppose the bills.
Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, representatives of the Civil Intelligence Front said the opposition was apprehensive about the government’s new bills.
They argued that any deficiencies in the proposed legislation could have been addressed through amendments and maintained that the government would not introduce laws intended to work against the interests of the public.
The views were expressed by Niruksha Kumara, co-convener of the Joint Opposition, and Priyantha Thilakaratne, a civil society activist.
The representatives voiced their support for the government’s proposed legislation amid debate over the new bills.
