Civil Intelligence Front Raises Concerns Over Alleged Misconduct at Trincomalee Prison

The Civil Intelligence Front has raised concerns over alleged disciplinary violations and overcrowding at Trincomalee Prison, calling on the authorities to investigate the reported incidents and address potential security risks.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, Sanjaya Mahawatta said his own experience of being imprisoned had made him attentive to conditions and activities inside correctional facilities.

Mahawatta alleged that a gathering had been held by prison officers at Trincomalee Prison while the relevant prison commissioner was absent. He said the incident had come to light and raised questions about discipline and the conduct of prison officials.

He also expressed concern over the number of inmates held at the facility, claiming that approximately 500 prisoners were being accommodated despite the prison reportedly having a capacity of around 150.

Mahawatta warned that overcrowding could create serious problems if unrest or conflict broke out among inmates. He questioned who would be held responsible if such an incident occurred and urged the authorities to take appropriate action to improve prison management.

The Civil Intelligence Front called on the minister responsible for prisons to investigate the allegations, address overcrowding and prevent further disciplinary violations.

Mahawatta added that the organisation intended to disclose further information regarding the procedures used to supply food to the prison, suggesting that this would be addressed separately.

The organisation said the reported concerns required attention from the relevant authorities to ensure proper discipline, security and accountability within the prison system.
