Buddhist Monks Thank Supporters After Ending Satyagraha at Viharamahadevi Park
· Sri Lanka
Buddhist monks who took part in a satyagraha at Viharamahadevi Park have thanked those who supported their march from Kandy to Colombo and their subsequent protest, which was organised to seek the release of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero.
Speaking at a media briefing, Ven. Dhamma Nipuna Thero of Malabe, founder of Pathankanda Aranya Senasanaya, said the monks had undertaken the march at the invitation of Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero.
He expressed gratitude to the devotees and other supporters who provided food, medical assistance and other necessities throughout the journey and protest.
Ven. Dhamma Nipuna Thero said the monks had faced considerable physical hardship during the march and the stay in Colombo. Some had fallen ill with fever and required hospital treatment.
He also praised former minister Sarath Weerasekara for arranging medical assistance and covering expenses when some of the monks became unwell.
The monk said Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero had played a significant role in organising the activities despite difficult conditions, including persistent rain, exhaustion and a lack of adequate rest. He added that the monks’ robes were often soaked by morning because of the wet conditions.
According to Ven. Dhamma Nipuna Thero, the group continued its daily religious observances despite these difficulties. He said Ven. Kassapa Thero had become severely exhausted and developed a high fever during the protest.
He explained that the monks eventually ended their satyagraha after receiving a message from senior Buddhist prelates, choosing to comply with their guidance. He said the group had also moved to Viharamahadevi Park following a court order.
Ven. Dhamma Nipuna Thero reiterated his appreciation to everyone who had helped the monks during the march and protest, acknowledging the sacrifices made by those involved.
