21-year-old student investigated over social media post referencing President

Police have launched an investigation into a 21-year-old university student over a social media post containing references to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and statements about possible “bloodshed” in Nikaweratiya.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, speaking at the post-Cabinet media briefing held today (13), said the student is a resident of the Kotawehera Police Division in Nikaweratiya.

According to the Minister, the student had published a post on social media on October 11, stating that Nikaweratiya would turn into a “pool of blood” on the same day.

The post also contained references to bloodshed and karma, along with a statement mentioning President Dissanayake and a possible visit to Kurunegala.

Minister Jayatissa stated that such social media posts warranted investigation, prompting the Police to conduct an inquiry.

The student was subsequently produced before the Nikaweratiya Magistrate’s Court and released on a surety bail of Rs. 500,000.

Minister Jayatissa confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
