The rideshare careened into a stationary police car while the Mazda crashed into a bollard, which in turn hit a 56-year-old female bystander.
She suffered a cut to her head and was taken to hospital in a stable condition. No one else was injured. Officers arrested the alleged driver, a 36-year-old man from South Australia, before he was taken to St Vincent’s hospital for mandatory testing under police guard. Nearby streets were teeming with shoppers, Acting Superintendent Adam Solah said on Friday. “There were people out late-night shopping outside the Queen Victoria building, it was very crowded,” he said. “It was fortunate that we were able to arrest the male person so quickly.
“There was a lot of shoppers around QVB building and ... George St is generally pedestrian or tram access or police vehicles along there. “It definitely could have been worse.” Solah thanked a number of bystanders who “did a really good job” by rushing to help those involved before paramedics arrived soon after. He added the police car hit during the “chaotic” incident was responding to the initial carjacking reports. “After their vehicle was struck, they were able to get out of the vehicle straight away and arrest that male person who had been in the allegedly stolen vehicle,” Solah said.
The alleged carjacker is currently assisting police with ongoing inquiries. While he is not known to NSW Police, Solah said he does have a history with South Australian Police. Police expect to charge the man with a number of “serious” offences later on Friday. Investigations remain ongoing, with police looking into the potential influence of drugs or alcohol.
