Sri Lanka Strengthens Global Tech Ambitions with Launch of WIIN Institute at TRACE

Sri Lanka has taken a significant step toward advancing its position in the global technology arena with the launch of the Wireless Intelligence and Innovation (WIIN) Institute of Technology. The inauguration, held at TRACE Expert City in Colombo, marked a key milestone in the country’s efforts to foster innovation and drive digital transformation.

The event brought together a distinguished audience of government representatives, diplomats, international academics, and industry leaders, highlighting strong local and global support for the initiative. WIIN is built on the vision of being “globally impactful, locally driven,” aiming to deliver cutting-edge research while contributing to regional economic development.

The institute will focus on five key sectors: telecommunications, energy, construction, fintech, and healthcare. Through these areas, WIIN intends to develop scalable, high-impact solutions, ranging from next-generation wireless technologies to smart infrastructure and advanced healthcare systems.

In addition to research and development, WIIN will address the growing global demand for skilled tech professionals by offering specialised training programmes. These initiatives will equip individuals with expertise in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, helping bridge the global talent gap.

A major strength of the institute lies in its international collaborations. WIIN has partnered with leading organisations including the 6G Flagship Programme at the University of Oulu in Finland and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, bringing global expertise into Sri Lanka’s innovation ecosystem. It also plans to work closely with local universities to strengthen ties between academia and industry.

The launch ceremony featured several prominent figures, including Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne, Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha, Chief Advisor to the President Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, and Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy Waruna Sri Dhanapala, alongside international academics and technology experts.

As countries increasingly look to technology as a driver of economic growth, the establishment of WIIN signals Sri Lanka’s commitment to building a sustainable, innovation-led future through research, collaboration, and talent development.
