Vehicle Falls Into Roadside Pothole on Duplicate Road in Bambalapitiya
· Sri Lanka
A vehicle fell into an open pothole on Duplicate Road in Bambalapitiya last evening, causing a brief disruption in the area.
The incident occurred near Dickman Road, where a section of the road had been excavated for ongoing water pipe maintenance work. According to reports, the pothole was left open during the maintenance process.
The driver, reportedly unable to notice the uncovered excavation while travelling along the road, drove directly into the pit. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in the incident.
Following the accident, local authorities and workers at the site arranged for a crane to lift the vehicle out of the pothole. The recovery operation was successfully completed later without further complications.
The area is known for heavy traffic, and the incident has raised concerns about road safety and proper signage around ongoing maintenance works.
Officials are expected to review safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, particularly in high-traffic urban roads where utility repairs are frequently carried out.
