University of Sri Jayewardenepura: Blending Heritage, Innovation, and Academic Excellence

Rooted in a proud cultural and intellectual heritage, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura—fondly known as “Ja’pura”—stands today as one of Sri Lanka’s leading institutions of higher learning. Its origins trace back to 1873, when the visionary Buddhist monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera established a center of learning that would later evolve into a modern university.

The institution gained full recognition as a state university under the University Act of 1959, then known as Vidyodaya University, before adopting its present name in 1978. Over the decades, it has grown into the largest state university in the country, located in the serene surroundings of Gangodawila, Nugegoda.

Today, Ja’pura welcomes more than 5,000 new students annually and offers a diverse academic portfolio across 11 faculties. These include disciplines such as management studies and commerce, humanities and social sciences, medical sciences, engineering, technology, computer science, and environmental and aquatic resources—reflecting its commitment to comprehensive, future-focused education.

Under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Senior Professor Patmalal M Manage, the university continues to strengthen its global research presence. It is particularly renowned for its contributions to public health, environmental toxicology, and sustainability. Specialized research centers such as the Centre for Dengue Research and the Centre for Water Quality and Algae Research have positioned the university at the forefront of addressing critical national and global challenges.

Beyond academics, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has played a vital role in shaping Sri Lanka’s cultural and professional landscape. Its alumni include distinguished figures such as Sunil Ariyarathne and Jackson Anthony, along with numerous leaders in business, science, and the arts.

With a legacy spanning more than a century, Ja’pura remains a symbol of knowledge, resilience, and national progress—continuing to bridge tradition with modernity while nurturing generations of innovators and thought leaders.
