University of Colombo Makes History with Victory at Nuremberg Moot Court 2026

In a landmark achievement for Sri Lanka’s legal and academic community, the Faculty of Law at the University of Colombo has secured first place at the prestigious Nuremberg Moot Court 2026, marking a historic first for the nation.

The competition, widely regarded as one of the world’s most distinguished international law mooting events, concluded on 25 July 2026 after an intense series of rounds featuring 130 students from 34 universities across 25 countries. The event is jointly organized by the International Nuremberg Principles Academy and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, bringing together some of the brightest legal minds from around the globe.

Representing Sri Lanka with exceptional skill and determination, the University of Colombo team emerged champions, demonstrating outstanding advocacy, legal reasoning, and teamwork throughout the competition. The winning team comprised Gevindu Pitiduwa Gamage, Sahanma Perumbuli Achchige, and Zaman Mohamed Nazar, under the guidance of team coaches Buthmini Levhara Mohotty and Mahin De Silva.

Adding further pride to the achievement, Zaman Mohamed Nazar was also named among the First Best Speakers of the competition, alongside Natalia Anesashvili of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (Georgia) and Simon Wilton of the University of New South Wales (Australia).

The finals were presided over by International Criminal Court Judge Joanna Korner CMG KC, alongside a distinguished panel of judges comprising leading international and national jurists, prosecutors, academics, and civil society representatives.

This victory represents a significant milestone for Sri Lanka, as it is the first time a Sri Lankan team has not only reached the finals but also gone on to win the Nuremberg Moot Court. It highlights the growing strength of legal education in the country and underscores the global competitiveness of Sri Lankan students.

The accomplishment is a moment of immense pride for the University of Colombo and the nation as a whole, inspiring future generations of law students to aim for excellence on the international stage.
