University of Colombo Ranked No. 1 in Sri Lanka in Global Webometrics Index

The University of Colombo has once again secured its place as Sri Lanka’s leading higher education institution, ranking number one nationally in the prestigious Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.

Reaffirming its global standing, the university achieved an impressive international rank of 1,745 among more than 32,000 universities across over 200 countries. This accomplishment highlights the institution’s continued dedication to academic excellence, impactful research, and a strong digital presence.

The Webometrics Ranking evaluates universities based on three key indicators: Visibility, Excellence, and Openness. Visibility, which carries the highest weight at 50%, measures the extent of external networks linking to the university’s web domain. Excellence accounts for 40%, focusing on highly cited research publications across 27 academic disciplines. Openness contributes the remaining 10%, assessing citation data linked to recognized research profiles.

The University of Colombo demonstrated outstanding performance across all three categories, reflecting its commitment to research impact, transparency, and global academic engagement.

This achievement is a significant milestone not only for the university but also for Sri Lanka’s broader higher education sector. Maintaining the top national position enhances the country’s academic reputation internationally, while also encouraging further research collaboration and innovation.

Other Sri Lankan universities featured in the top five include the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna, and University of Moratuwa.
