Tourism earnings fall 10% despite strong visitor arrivals
· Sri Lanka
Earnings generated from Sri Lanka's tourism sector decreased by 10 percent year-on-year to reach USD 2.06 billion over the first eight months of 2026, according to recent figures released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL). This compares to the USD 2.29 billion brought in during the corresponding period of 2025.
The downward movement in gross revenue has emerged despite the country registering a sustained inflow of foreign travelers, indicating a decrease in average daily visitor expenditure and shorter lengths of stay.
Industry stakeholders and economic analysts suggest that competitive regional pricing and a higher composition of budget travelers have contributed to the earnings contraction, calling for targeted promotional drives aimed at high-yield tourism segments.
