Three Lions At Tokyo Zoo Die Amid Extreme Heat

A zoo in Tokyo is investigating the deaths of three lions, with veterinarians suspecting that extreme heat may have been a contributing factor.

The incidents occurred at Tama Zoological Park, where a number of lions began showing signs of illness in mid-July. Out of the zoo’s 16 lions, 10 reportedly fell sick, displaying symptoms such as loss of appetite and difficulty standing.

Despite efforts by zoo staff to treat the affected animals— including cooling measures and medical care—three female lions succumbed over the following days. A three-year-old lioness died on July 28, followed by an 11-year-old on July 31, and a 15-year-old on August 2.

Preliminary findings from pathological examinations have indicated severe dehydration and multiple organ failure in all three cases. While heatstroke is strongly suspected, officials say the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after further test results are completed.

Three additional lions remain under close veterinary care as treatment continues.

The zoo has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and stated that it is taking all necessary measures to safeguard the remaining animals. Authorities have also confirmed that the lion exhibit will remain closed until further notice, as they assess conditions and ensure the wellbeing of the animals.
